FivE coach operators were given permission by the West Midland Licensing Authority, last week, to charge single fares on services running between Donnington Army camp and London. Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool.
The reason given for the application was that all camp personnel did not necessarily finish their duties at the same time, and hitch-hiked from the camp rather than wait for the coaches.
A_ spokesman for the camp authorities said that although many men hitchhiked home, they would be glad of transport facilities for the return journey.
Announcing his decision, ,the Authority, Mr. W. P. James, said that with single fares there would be the
possibility of operators running into difficulties through there being too large a demand for seats on the return journeys. The position would be kept under review.
