ONLY road transport could carry fish from Mey to Glasgow in time for market, the Scottish Deputy Licensing Authority was told last week, when Mr. J. L. Simpson, a Mey haulier, applied for an A licence in addition to his B licence for two vehicles.
The harbours at Mey and Stroma were being restored to encourage local crofters to take up fishing again—part of a policy to arrest depopulation. Mr. W. Allan, a county councillor who gave supporting evidence, said that the fishermen preferred their fish to go to Glasgow rather than Thurso.
The applicant accepted a suggestion by the Authority that he should withdraw the application until next spring.
