OCAL approaches to employers by branches of the Transport and General Workers' Union. designed to improve on wage settlements reached at national level, were deplored by both sides at a recent meeting of the National Joint Industrial Council for the Omnibus Industry.
The employers' side expressed concern at the action of five branches of the union in making local approaches, contrary to the constitution of the council, and asked the union side to explain their attitude on the question.
After the union side had informed the employers that it was their intention to accept loyally the decisions of the council, and to make their views known to all their members, the whole council passed a resolution deploring individual approaches to employers on watts and conditions of service. The union side further deplored the fact that the unofficial applications in Manchester and district had, in the main, been made in places where a fulltime union official was responsible.
At the same meeting, the council agreed to reduce from 12 to six months the qualifying period entitling new employees to holidays.
