I shown that vertical exhaust pipes on diesel-engined vehicles gave no advantage in reducing urban air pollution—and there were positive disadvantages to their use.
Mr. Marples stated this in the Commons and then went on to list some of the disadvantages. Many exhaust constituents, especially diesel oil smuts, were heavier than air and were better blown out near the ground than into windows and on to the heads of passers-by, he said. The shape of many vehicles also produced an air-flow when moving that would draw exhaust down at the rear in the face of following vehicles.
