FARES increases have been granted to Edinburgh Transport Department, designed to bring in 08,000 in a full year. The increases cover the •medium fare bracket, leaving the lower and top fares unchanged, Before the Scottish Traffic Commissioners, the general manager, Mr. W. M. Little, referred to the high cost of replacements at 0,500 per vehicle. The corporation replace 40 vehicles each year at a cost of approximately 000,000, he said. Policy was to replace as far as possible from earnings and to minimize borrowing. Last year, the department put 4250,000 to reserve for replacement. This year, the estimates were for approximately half that figure. Mr. Little estimated that a traffic loss of perhaps per cent. would result from the increases and the redistribution of traffic. The ultimate fares would provide an average rate of 2.238d. per mile.
