ERF Ltd,

Sun Works, Sandbach, Cheshire ERF has shown a lively interest in Europe for some time now and to underline this a major exhibit on its stand is a Gardner-engined version of its European 38-tonner. This is the first time that this model has been shown with Gardner 8LXB engine. Behind the Gardner is a 14in Lipe-Rollway twin-plate clutch and the new David Brown 8,750 eight-speed overdrive top gearbox. The rear axle is a 13 ton capacity Kirkstall D85-13-2 hub reduction model. The cab on this model has a newly furnished interior which is fully trimmed on all interior surfaces to a very high standard. Instrumentation is fully metric and the model shown is left-hand drive, but a right-handdrive model is available, Perhaps of more interest to British operators is the 30 tons gcw 4 x 2 artic which is fitted with a Gardner 6LX8. This engine has been rated at 180 bhp under the new BS AU 141a: 1971 test conditions and is therefore limited to operation at 30 tons gcw. This model has the "classic" specification of a Gardner engine, a David Brown gearbox and a Kirstall axle. Top speed is given as 50 mph using an overdrive top gear and a 6.11 to 1 rear axle ratio. This model uses the ERF grp cab which now has twin heaters, demisters, two-speed self-parking electric wipers, electric screen washers and dual 7in. headlamps. Also standard now is the front towing attachment and heavy-duty steel channel bumper bar.

Another tractive unit exhibit is the 34 tons gcw (design weight) Rolls-Royce Eagle 220 Mk II engined A series. This model a 14in. Lipe-Rollway twin-plate clutch and a Fuller Twin-countershaft RT(0)609 ninespeed gearbox which has an overdrive top gear. Top speed of this model using an Eaton 19320 single-speed rear axle with a ratio of 5.6 to 1 is given as 61 mph. ZF integral power steering is fitted as standard. Two rigid vehicles are on show. One is the 16 tons gvw rigid designed for use with a drawbar trailer at 32 tons gcw and the other is an 8 x 4 30-tanner. Wheelbase of the fourwheeler is 17ft Oin. and this is sufficient to allow a 24ft body. With a 24ft-long drawbar trailer some 8ft more load space is available over an articulated truck with a 4Oft semi-trailer. This model uses a Cummins NHK 220 engine which produces 215 bhp net installed at 2100 rpm and 605 lb ft torque at 1500 rpm. A 14in. Lipe-Rollway clutch is used in conjunction with a Fuller RT(0)609 nine-speed gearbox.

The 8 x 4 rigid for operation at 30 tons gvw has a wheelbase of 19ft and is suitable for a body length of 21ft. Basic frame size is the same as for the four-wheel drawbar unit, le 12iin. x x
