on about 90 miles of the Great Northern Railway Board's system in Ulster for the last time. It is hoped that the G.N.R. and the Ulster Transport Authority will be able to find jobs for the 300 railwaymen who will be affected.
There is reported to be little local concern about the railway closure. A railway official said that whilst some traders had demanded the retention of the railways, they had contributed to their downfall by sending goods by road.
In Dublin various parties objected at an inquiry last week to the Board's proposed closure of certain lines in Eire. Difficulties in operating road transport with road blocks set up at the frontier, because of the activities of armed raiders, were mentioned.
